Android Users Urged to Delete Dangerous Apps Linked to Espionage

Security experts have identified a set of Android apps capable of stealing personal data and recording phone calls, with some available on Google Play.

  • ESET security experts have identified 12 Android apps, including chat and news apps, that plant a Trojan to steal data and control the camera.
  • The VajraSpy remote access trojan, linked to the Patchwork APT group in Asia, is behind the espionage activities of these apps.
  • Six of the identified apps were available on Google Play, raising concerns about the security of the platform.
  • The apps employ social engineering attacks, often involving romance, to lure targets into downloading them.
  • Google has removed all reported apps from the Play Store and advises users to also check for other malicious apps like SpyLoan and Xamalicious.
