Overview
- Google has activated an OS-level feature that lets Android coordinate moving saved passwords and FIDO/WebAuthn passkeys from one compatible password manager to another.
- To start a transfer you open the new manager, choose its import option, and Android detects installed managers then returns you to the old app to review and authorize what moves.
- The flow is available today with Google Password Manager, 1Password, Bitwarden, and Dashlane, and Google says more partners will adopt the capability.
- Google says transfers are kept secure during handoff, but reporting notes it is unclear whether individual password manager apps must ship updates or if the change is handled server-side, so users should keep apps up to date.
- By removing unencrypted CSV exports and enabling passkey migration, the feature should make switching managers easier for users and could change competition among password managers depending on how quickly vendors adopt the OS-level flow.
