Android Adds System-Level Transfers for Passwords and Passkeys

This prevents unencrypted file exports, reducing friction for users who want to move credentials between password managers.

Overview

  • Google rolled out the feature on Thursday, September 10, 2026, by adding an Android flow that coordinates direct app-to-app handoffs of saved passwords and passkeys.
  • To use it you start the import in the new manager, Android detects compatible source apps, the old manager requires user authorization, and credentials move between apps in seconds.
  • The launch supports Google Password Manager, 1Password, Bitwarden, and Dashlane, with Google saying more partners will adopt the Credentials Transfer API but giving no timeline.
  • Vendor notes and reporting show compatibility depends on device software: Dashlane cites Android 10 plus recent Play Services while Bitwarden requires Android 14 with Play Services 26.21 or newer.
  • By removing risky CSV exports and enabling passkey portability, the change should make switching managers safer and easier and may accelerate broader passkey adoption by lowering vendor lock-in and setup pain for users.
