Android 17 Adds Built-In iPhone-to-Android Transfer but Leaves Some Pixels Out

The built-in tool enables wireless moves of eSIMs, account credentials and media as a response to the EU's Digital Markets Act.

Overview

  • Google integrated a new Android Switch into Android 17 and began rolling the update to select Pixel phones since June.
  • The upgraded transfer can move Google Accounts, passwords, Wi‑Fi credentials, eSIMs, photos, videos, contacts, messages and calendars without a separate app.
  • The feature requires the receiving phone to run Android 17 and the iPhone to use iOS 26.3 or later for transfers to work.
  • Device support is limited today: Pixel 8, 9 and 10 series plus Samsung Galaxy Z Flip8 and Z Fold8 are listed as supported; the Pixel 8 can only run the tool during initial setup and Pixel 6 and 7 models are reportedly excluded.
  • The change responds to the EU Digital Markets Act’s data‑portability rules and could reduce platform lock‑in, with Google saying more device support will arrive in the coming months.
