Andrew Heaney and Jose Leclerc to Stay on Texas Rangers for the 2024 Season
Texas Rangers exercised $13 million player option for Andrew Heaney and $6 million team option for Jose Leclerc as team defends 2023 World Series title.
- Pitchers Andrew Heaney and Jose Leclerc will be staying with the Texas Rangers for the 2024 season. Heaney exercised his $13 million player options while Leclerc had his $6 million club option exercised by the team.
- Heaney starred in the Rangers 2023 World Series victory, recording a 4.15 ERA across 34 games - 28 of which he started - including a notable Game 4 start where he pitched five innings of one-run ball contributing to the Rangers' 11-7 win.
- Despite mid-season struggles due to a neck issue, Leclerc stepped up his performance once he regained full health, posting a 2.68 ERA across his 57 relief appearances during the regular season. He further excelled in the postseason with 13 appearances, tying for the third-highest total in a single postseason.
- Heaney falling short of 150 innings in the regular season, resulted in the value of his option not increasing to $20 million. Had he not exercised his 2024 option, a $500,000 buyout would have been due.
- If Leclerc's option hadn't been exercised by the Rangers, he would have received a $750,000 buyout. The Texas Rangers also have a $6.25 million option for 2025 for Leclerc, who has appeared in 286 regular-season games for Texas since his big league debut in 2016 but was sidelined for most of 2020 with a shoulder injury and all of 2021 due to ligament reconstruction elbow surgery that delayed the start of his 2022 season.
