Andrew Campbell Gets Eight-and-a-Half Years for Manslaughter of Baby Dexter

The judge said he chose his drug habit over the infant’s care, with parole eligibility set for September 2026.

Overview

  • Brisbane Supreme Court sentenced the 45-year-old to eight-and-a-half years and returned him to custody, with about 898 days of pre-sentence custody declared time served.
  • Court evidence said Dexter, eight months, died from acute malnutrition and severe dehydration after being left unattended for at least 21 hours as his carers consumed drugs over days.
  • Campbell pleaded guilty in March to manslaughter, failing to provide the necessaries of life and negligent acts causing harm, and a misconduct-with-a-corpse charge was withdrawn.
  • Justice Catherine Muir described the breach of duty as prolonged and abhorrent and found Campbell showed limited remorse.
  • The court heard the baby was bathed and changed before triple-0 was called, and reporting said Campbell hid drug utensils and refused to perform CPR when asked.
