André Ricard Retrospective Opens at Disseny Hub Barcelona

Staging more than 140 everyday objects in domestic scenes, the expanded show highlights Ricard’s utilitarian, ‘‘invisible’’ design that shaped Spanish daily life.

Overview

  • The exhibition opens at Disseny Hub Barcelona on 29 October and runs through 14 March, presenting an expanded version of the touring show that drew large crowds in Madrid.
  • Curators Marina Povedano and Arnau Pascual arrange the display by rooms — kitchen, table, bathroom, living room, study and memory — to show objects in the settings where they were meant to be used.
  • More than 140 items from DHub collections, the Design Library and private lenders are on view, including the Norit bottle, Puig’s Agua Lavanda flask, the Ibiza switch, the Tatú lamp and the Barcelona 1992 Olympic torch.
  • The show emphasizes Ricard’s focus on functionality and durability, illustrating design choices such as thicker everyday tableware for daily use and material changes that allowed mass production for Puig.
  • Visitors can send postcards to Ricard using a pencil he designed, and the exhibition frames his lasting influence on Spanish industrial design as well as his ongoing work at age 97.
