Andhra Pradesh Touts Monsoon Water Gains: 650 tmcft Stored, 150 tmcft Diverted to Rayalaseema

Officials say large outflows to the sea persisted despite expanded storage.

Overview

  • The Water Resources Department, acting on Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu’s directives, executed a plan to store inflows and release water systematically to tanks and fields.
  • Since June 1, Krishna delta farmers used 52 tmcft, 12 tmcft more than last year, and 70 tmcft was supplied for irrigation in the Godavari delta.
  • Diversions to Rayalaseema moved through Pothireddypadu, the Handri-Neeva system and the Nagarjuna Sagar right canal, irrigating about one lakh acres.
  • Reservoir holdings as of August 24 included 56 tmcft at Somasila, 31 tmcft at Kandaleru, 15 tmcft at Veligodu and 8 tmcft in the Vamsadhara basin.
  • Despite management steps, 1,969 tmcft flowed to the sea, including 1,483 tmcft from the Godavari, 468 tmcft from the Krishna and 18 tmcft from Vamsadhara.
