Andhra Pradesh to Sell Onions at ₹4/kg in Kurnool as State Ramps Up Procurement

The cut-price retail plan follows rain-damaged harvests and a government buying drive that farmer groups say does not meet their ₹2,000-per-quintal demand.

Overview

  • Ration card holders can buy onions at fair price shops in Kurnool from September 4, according to Civil Supplies officials.
  • MARKFED is purchasing onions at ₹1,200 per quintal on Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu’s instructions, buying 4,817 quintals from August 31 to September 2 at the Kurnool yard.
  • Including Rythu Bazars, authorities reported 5,846 quintals procured over the same period, while traders bought only 233 quintals.
  • The Agriculture Marketing Department asked officials to arrange purchases of about 3,400 metric tonnes still in fields and urged growers to avoid panic plucking.
  • The Andhra Pradesh Farmers’ Association is pressing for a ₹2,000-per-quintal MSP, citing high cultivation costs and alleging trader cartels offering as low as ₹500.
