Overview

  • The Andhra Pradesh government will reopen 29,000 fair price shops for ration distribution starting June 1, replacing the mobile dispensing unit (MDU) system introduced by the previous YSRCP government.
  • Doorstep delivery of rations will now be limited to senior citizens above 65 years and differently-abled beneficiaries to ensure accessibility for vulnerable groups.
  • A government survey revealed operational failures in the MDU system, including 25% non-delivery rates, overcharging by operators, and 200 cases of rice smuggling.
  • The discontinuation of MDUs is expected to save ₹353.81 crore annually and improve accountability in the public distribution system.
  • Existing MDU vans will be transferred free of charge to eligible beneficiaries who had paid 10% of the vehicle cost under welfare corporation schemes.
