Andhra Pradesh Sets Up Panel on Rushikonda as Pawan Kalyan Pitches MICE Makeover

Final use will be decided after recommendations, with environmental cases still active.

Overview

  • The state issued a government order on August 29 constituting a Group of Ministers led by Tourism Minister Kandula Durgesh with Payyavula Keshav and Dola Sree Bala Veeranjaneya Swamy to recommend how to utilise the idle complex.
  • After inspecting the site, Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan proposed turning the facility into a MICE or destination‑wedding hub and said recommendations would be sent to Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu before the winter Assembly session.
  • He reported poor upkeep, citing collapsed ceiling planks, peeling walls and water leakage, and directed urgent repairs to make parts of the property safe and usable.
  • Project spending ballooned from an initial estimate of ₹164 crore to about ₹453 crore with only four of seven planned blocks completed, including roughly ₹39 crore on interiors.
  • The site is under NGT scrutiny with earlier Supreme Court limits on construction, and the demolished APTDC resort previously generated about ₹7 crore a year while the new complex incurs significant upkeep, including roughly ₹1.5 crore in electricity.
