Andhra Pradesh Renames YSR District as YSR Kadapa District

The order issued under the Andhra Pradesh Districts (Formation) Act, 1974, follows numerous petitions to reinstate the district’s original name.

Overview

  • G. Jayalakshmi, Special Chief Secretary in the Revenue Department, signed G.O.MS.No.170 on May 26 to formalise the change.
  • The move restores 'Kadapa' to the district’s name after it was retitled YSR District in 2010 to honour former Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy.
  • Originally spelled 'Cuddapah', the district was officially renamed 'Kadapa' in 2005.
  • Kadapa, meaning 'threshold' in Telugu, has historically served as the gateway for pilgrims travelling to Tirupati.
  • The district, home to YSRCP president Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, is set to host the Telugu Desam Party’s Mahanadu event from May 27 to 29.
