Overview
- Chief Secretary K. Vijayanand directed utilities to maximize monsoon-driven hydropower to meet a forecast of 210–225 million units a day with peak load expected around 10,200–10,500 MW.
- Hydel output is about 22 MU per day and could rise to roughly 26 MU with full operational efficiency, reducing dependence on costly market purchases.
- Planning assumptions target over 100 MU per day from APGENCO’s hydel and thermal stations, 35–40 MU from central generating stations, and 25–30 MU from renewables subject to weather.
- Officials reported hydel generation exceeding 2,000 MU by end-August, the highest in more than a decade, with 326 MU banked as a contingency reserve.
- The Energy Department will launch the EPMS pilot on September 1 to centralize short-term procurement and schedule exchange purchases during low-price periods.
