Andhra Pradesh Lets Trained Ayurvedic Doctors Perform Limited Surgeries as IMA Opposes

Implementation planning is underway, with the IMA preparing legal and administrative challenges.

Overview

  • The state approved the order on December 24 under Health Minister Y Satya Kumar Yadav, citing IMCC 2020 regulations and NCISM guidance to integrate traditional and modern systems.
  • Postgraduate-qualified Ayurvedic practitioners who complete prescribed training may independently perform a defined list of general surgical, ENT and ophthalmological procedures, including wound suturing, piles and fissure treatment, and skin grafting.
  • IMA President Dr Dilip P Bhanushali called the policy a huge blunder and said the association will file a memorandum and continue making representations to the Health Minister and the Prime Minister.
  • The IMA says a public interest litigation concerning the issue is before the Supreme Court of India.
  • State officials, including Ayush Department director K Dinesh, have begun drawing up an action plan, and the matter is slated for discussion at the IMA’s All India Medical Conference on December 27–28 in Ahmedabad.
