Andhra Pradesh Gears Up for Stree Shakti Launch With Smart Cards and Fleet Overhauls

Three key measures—safety upgrades, digital ID cards, depot overhauls—are being fast-tracked for the zero-fare program’s August 15 launch.

Overview

  • APSRTC will issue mandatory ID-based smart cards to over 2.6 crore women, girls and transgender commuters before the scheme’s rollout.
  • Depots are undergoing shock absorber overhauls, hanging-grip installations and footboard reinforcements as occupancy is expected to surge above 95 percent.
  • Body cameras for female conductors and CCTV systems will be installed across 75 percent of APSRTC’s 11,449-bus fleet to boost passenger safety.
  • The state plans to add 1,050 electric buses this year—half arriving within six months—to accommodate higher ridership and reduce emissions.
  • The zero-fare scheme covering 8,456 Palle Velugu, Express and Metro Express buses will cost ₹1,942 crore annually and excludes interstate, chartered and package services.
