Ancient Aspendos Tomb Yields Coins Showing Wrestlers

Turkey’s culture ministry suggested the buried person may have been an athlete based on the coin imagery pending scientific confirmation.

Overview

  • Archaeologists excavating the ancient city of Aspendos in southwest Turkey uncovered a stone slab tomb from the Classical period that contained a single skeleton and several silver staters showing two wrestlers.
  • The burial is dated to roughly the 5th–4th centuries BCE and was reported publicly after the excavation team examined the grave goods.
  • Culture and Tourism Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy said the coins and other finds indicate the occupant may have been involved in sports, possibly a wrestler.
  • Independent scholars and members of the research team caution that coins circulated as currency and say confirmation requires osteological analysis for injuries or stress markers linked to contact sports.
  • Aspendos historically minted wrestler-depicting staters for over a century and later built a stadium for athletic events, which makes the wrestler hypothesis plausible but not yet proven and warrants further scientific study.
