ANCAP's First Safety Comparison of Large Pickups Puts F-150 on Top, Silverado Last
The ADAS-only exercise responds to rising concerns about large utes, shaping a broader test program.
Overview
- ANCAP evaluated five models across 48 scenarios at the AARC in Victoria, testing AEB for cars, pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists plus lane support, speed recognition and driver monitoring.
- Ford F-150 Lariat/Platinum scored 81% for a Platinum grade, with strong performance for car-to-cyclist and motorcyclist detection and rear-end collision avoidance.
- Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ/ZR2 earned 27% for Bronze, held back by camera-only AEB that scored zero for cyclist avoidance and by weak speed assistance.
- Ram 1500 Limited achieved Gold at 70%, while Toyota Tundra reached 50% and the LandCruiser 79 Series scored 55% for Silver despite limited lane support.
- The results assess crash avoidance only and will guide ANCAP’s future framework, with grades valid through 2026 as large-pickup sales in Australia have risen about 270% since 2019.
