ANCAP Ups MG 3 to Four Stars Despite Seat-Latch Failure as Suzuki Swift Rises to Three

A review of crash-test rules will follow the MG 3’s unpenalised seat-latch failure.

Overview

  • ANCAP confirmed a four-star rating for the 2025 MG 3 MY25.5 built from April 30, 2025, after MG added a front-centre airbag, a driver monitoring camera and stronger autonomous emergency braking.
  • Euro NCAP’s frontal-offset test found the MG 3 driver’s seat adjuster failed and the seat twisted, yielding a Poor score for the driver’s lower leg and an airbag ‘bottom out’ that limited head protection to Adequate.
  • Euro NCAP and ANCAP said current protocols could not apply an extra penalty for the component failure and will review the rules; ANCAP urged MG to make a running change and retrospectively fix cars already in the market.
  • Euro NCAP recommended consumers consider alternatives, the UK’s Which? flagged the MG 3 as a Don’t Buy, and the DVSA said it is monitoring the issue.
  • Suzuki’s Australian-spec Swift built from August 2025 received three stars after adding Euro-spec front-end reinforcements and a driver monitoring system, though its safety-assist score remains lower than Europe without intelligent speed assist.
