Anantnag Teen Dies After Landmine Blast Near Army’s Khundroo Camp

The explosion occurred beside the 21 Field Ammunition Depot, a site with a history of deadly accidents.

Overview

  • Officials identified the victim as 17-year-old Shahid Ahmad of Larnoo village, injured on Sunday near the camp’s fencing.
  • He was first treated at GMC Anantnag and then shifted to the Army’s 92 Base Hospital in Srinagar, where he died on Monday.
  • Authorities said he had entered the fenced area of the Khundroo camp and stepped on a landmine that detonated.
  • The Khundroo depot has recorded prior tragedies, including more than 20 labourers killed in a 2007 fire and subsequent incidents in 2011 and 2015.
  • The Army regularly defuses leftover ammunition in the nearby Rakhi Brah area, after which scrap collectors gather the remnants.
