ANA 737 Returns to Haneda After Possible Runway-Light Contact

Officials are examining damage to runway lighting to determine whether it relates to the jet’s nose-gear failure.

Overview

  • The Iwakuni-bound All Nippon Airways flight 639 departed Haneda around 8:35 p.m. local time and returned about 10 p.m. for inspection.
  • Post-landing checks found damage to the aircraft’s nose/front landing gear, and the jet was unable to taxi under its own power.
  • Airport staff also discovered damaged lighting on the departure runway used by the flight.
  • The MLIT Tokyo Airport Office launched an investigation into whether the lighting damage is connected to the nose-gear damage.
  • ANA said all 174 passengers and crew were unharmed, and the aircraft involved is a Boeing 737-800.
