Overview

  • On August 28, Amtrak will launch NextGen Acela revenue service with five U.S.-assembled trainsets, expanding to 28 sets through 2027.
  • Each train adds 82 seats, boosting overall Acela capacity by 4,728 seats when the full fleet is deployed.
  • NextGen Acela is certified for 160 mph operation, 10 mph faster than its predecessor, though actual speeds will depend on track and signaling upgrades.
  • The new sets feature ergonomic seating, USB and power outlets at every seat, free 5G-enabled Wi-Fi, larger windows and upgraded Café Acela dining options.
  • The Hornell, NY assembly used components from over 180 suppliers in 29 states and supported roughly 15,000 U.S. jobs, even as Amtrak navigates CEO Stephen Gardner’s March resignation and recent staff reductions.
