Amtrak Debuts 160 MPH NextGen Acela on Northeast Corridor

Built in New York by Alstom, the fleet boosts capacity with upgraded amenities, with 28 trainsets scheduled through 2027.

Overview

  • Five new trainsets begin service Thursday between Boston, New York and Washington with a top operating speed of 160 mph.
  • The trains add about 27% more seats and features such as 5G Wi‑Fi, power at every seat, improved cafe service and accessibility upgrades.
  • Manufactured in Hornell, N.Y., under a $2.3 billion program, the lighter sets use tilt technology and are designed for smoother rides.
  • Amtrak will start with two daily runs in each direction between Boston and Washington, expects to retire the original Acelas by spring 2026, and will add units through 2027.
  • Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced plans to reclaim management of Washington Union Station for repairs, security improvements and other upgrades.
