Amtrak Debris Forces LIRR Reroutes in East River Tunnel as Tube Reopens

The episode highlighted limited capacity from a yearlong closure for Sandy-related repairs.

Overview

  • LIRR Train 613 struck debris at 7:43 a.m. in Tube No. 4 en route to Penn Station, reported to be a door from an Amtrak locomotive.
  • MTA and Amtrak crews inspected the track, the tube was back in service by 9:10 a.m., and the MTA said the issue was resolved by around 10 a.m.
  • Roughly 50 LIRR trains were canceled, delayed or diverted, with many rerouted to Grand Central Madison during the morning peak; no injuries were reported.
  • LIRR President Rob Free said the incident underscores vulnerability with one tube already out and pressed Amtrak for steps to reduce future disruptions.
  • Amtrak said certain repairs require full closures and indicated no expected impact to the evening rush, with sequential tunnel work extending into 2027.
