Amtrak and Louisiana Plan to Revive Train Service Between Baton Rouge and New Orleans by 2027
$20 million settlement funds revival of route stopped in 1969; one round trip a day initially planned with stops in Gonzales, Laplace, and Jefferson Parish.
- With a potential start date in 2027, Amtrak and Louisiana plan to reintroduce train service between Baton Rouge and New Orleans, ceased since 1969, offering one round trip per day with potential for more as ridership increases.
- The $20 million funding for the project is a part of the settlement from the Road Home Program, aimed at reviving infrastructure initiatives and facilitating commuters with better transportation options.
- Apart from direct economic benefits to Baton Rouge and New Orleans, the train route is also expected to contribute to reducing road congestion and promoting employment opportunities across the stops.
- The trains will take 75 to 90 minutes between New Orleans and Baton Rouge, stopping at Gonzales, Laplace and Jefferson Parish. More details on schedules and fares will be released closer to the launch.
- Existing tracks owned by Canadian Pacific Kansas City and CN railways, along the I-10 corridor, will be used for the service. Infrastructure upgrades along the route are due to commence next year.
- This new route will join the Sunset Limited, City of New Orleans, Crescent lines and the projected New Orleans to Mobile corridor opening in 2024 in Amtrak’s Louisiana route schedule.
