Amsterdam Police Make 29 Arrests After Anti-Immigration March as City Declares Risk Zones

The mayor used risk-zone powers to manage polarized protests on a crowded matchday.

Overview

  • Mayor Femke Halsema designated Museumplein and parts of the center as veiligheidsrisicogebied, enabling preventive searches and a face-covering ban between 09:00 and 19:00.
  • The anti-immigration protest was moved from Dam Square to Museumplein and marched around Vondelpark, drawing roughly 300 at the podium and about 1,000 for the march.
  • The counterdemonstration at Jonas Daniël Meijerplein, organized by Samen Tegen Fascisme, drew several hundred people and concluded without major incidents after organizers dropped a plan to move toward the Dam.
  • After the main march ended, parts of the group roamed the center, set off heavy fireworks and caused damage; police and ME encircled a group at the Prinsengracht and made arrests.
  • Police reported 29 arrests overall for offenses including insult, vandalism and public-order violations, with earlier detentions near Centraal Station tied to prohibited weapons and face coverings, backed by a large ME deployment with water cannons, dogs and preventive searches.
