Amroha Woman’s Death: Husband, Two Relatives Arrested in Dowry-Death Probe

Police are treating the case as dowry death under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Overview

  • Police say the incident occurred on August 20 in Vanshiwala village of Uttar Pradesh’s Amroha district.
  • According to investigators, husband Nigam Singh cooked chicken despite his vegetarian wife’s objections, was drunk, and later claimed he found her hanging.
  • Officers allege Nigam, his brother Mahkar, and cousin Bijendra wrapped the body and dumped it in the Ganga about three kilometres away before filing a missing complaint.
  • The three were arrested on Thursday, and police recovered a dupatta believed to be linked to the case as divers search the river for the body.
  • Acting on a complaint by the victim’s mother, police registered BNS sections 80 and 238 against five in-laws, and the family alleges dowry harassment and murder.
