Overview
- Shah arrived in Siliguri on Thursday evening and stayed near Sukna before inaugurating and laying foundation stones for multiple Sashastra Seema Bal projects at the SSB Frontier Headquarters on Friday.
- At the SSB event Shah publicly accused former chief minister Mamata Banerjee of blocking land needed for border fencing and credited the new state government with rapid approvals for parcels the Centre sought since 2014.
- Shah opened the Kawakhali Ground exhibition on the three new criminal laws, the “Five Pillars” display running through August 26 to familiarise the public with the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam.
- A high-level border-security review meeting is scheduled for Saturday to assess coordination among the BSF, SSB, intelligence agencies and West Bengal police and to translate the announced projects into operational measures.
- The visit highlights the strategic importance of the narrow Siliguri Corridor as India’s land link to the Northeast and shows the Centre prioritising infrastructure, joint command checks and public outreach on legal reforms in the region.
