Overview
- On June 1, Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the new Central Forensic Science Laboratory building at Rajarhat, Kolkata, to bolster forensic support for eastern and northeastern states.
- The government has earmarked ₹2,800 crore to upgrade forensic science facilities across India and will invest ₹200 crore in a National Forensic Data Centre powered by artificial intelligence.
- Seven additional CFSL laboratories are planned for Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Kerala and Bihar to expand the laboratory network.
- The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam now mandate forensic evidence in investigations and have helped achieve 60 percent of chargesheets filed within 60 days.
- A nationwide campaign beginning January 2026 will train forensic teams and deploy mobile units to police stations, reinforcing the shift to an evidence-based criminal justice system.
