India Launches Land Port Management System to Digitise Border Crossings

The system links land ports with national customs and logistics platforms to speed cargo and passenger processing.

Overview

  • The government formally launched the Land Port Management System (LPMS) on Tuesday, June 9, with Home Minister Amit Shah unveiling the platform in New Delhi and opening stakeholder accommodation at Dawki and Srimantapur.
  • LPMS provides end-to-end digital workflows for cargo and passenger movement, including slot booking, payments, tracking, and single-window clearances to cut paperwork and processing delays.
  • Officials say the platform is integrated with national systems such as ICEGATE, the Unified Logistics Interface Platform (ULIP), and motor-vehicle databases to enable real-time exchange of logistics and regulatory data.
  • The Land Ports Authority of India currently runs 15 land ports and plans to build 11 more over the next three years, with West Bengal and the Siliguri Corridor named as priority areas for multimodal corridor and border infrastructure development.
  • Officials and LPAI chair Jayant Singh say the initiative aims to speed trade, improve border oversight, and create local economic hubs such as proposed textile clusters near Petrapole, with further rollout and system interoperability to be watched closely.
