Amex Launches Largest Ever Centurion Lounge Expansion

The company says bigger lounges and new sites aim to ease crowding and sharpen its premium travel offer as rivals grow their own networks.

Overview

  • American Express announced the expansion on Thursday, October 8, 2026, unveiling new builds and major enlargements across Newark, London, Philadelphia and Houston.
  • The Newark Terminal A lounge has been rescoped from about 18,000 square feet to more than 30,000 square feet, will span two floors with multiple bars, and is now expected to open in 2027.
  • A second Centurion Lounge at London Heathrow will be built in Terminal 5 at roughly 9,000 square feet and is scheduled to open in 2028, joining Amex’s existing Terminal 3 location.
  • Philadelphia’s Centurion Lounge will temporarily close on October 16, 2026 to double in size to over 12,000 square feet and is due to reopen by the end of 2027, while Houston’s IAH lounge will nearly triple to about 23,000 square feet with a 2028 completion target.
  • Amex says the projects will add amenities such as Blue Roast coffee bars, specialty dining, extra bars and showers, and the company expects the larger footprints to reduce crowding even as access rules for eligible Amex cardholders and guest limits remain in place.
