Americas Lose Measles-Free Status After Yearlong Transmission in Canada

PAHO urges fast-tracked immunization to close gaps driving transmission.

Overview

  • PAHO’s regional commission verified at least 12 months of continuous circulation of the same measles strain in Canada, revoking Canada’s elimination status and, by extension, the region’s certification.
  • By November 7, the Americas had 12,593 confirmed cases across 10 countries and 28 deaths, with roughly 95% of cases in Canada, Mexico and the United States; about 89% of infections are in unvaccinated people or those with unknown status.
  • Canada reported more than 5,100 cases in the past 12 months, with ongoing transmission documented in several provinces including Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan.
  • Mexico accounts for most regional deaths (23) and is receiving PAHO support that includes vaccine access via the revolving fund, laboratory strengthening, vaccinator training and a mission to Chihuahua to intensify response.
  • The United States remains at risk of losing its certification if transmission is not interrupted within required time frames, with the CDC confirming 1,681 cases and dozens of outbreaks in 2025.
