Americas Experience Measles Resurgence with Canada as Epicenter

Fueled by suboptimal two-dose coverage, the outbreak has prompted health authorities across the Americas to expand vaccination campaigns, declare health emergencies, intensify surveillance.

Overview

  • The Pan American Health Organization reported 10,139 confirmed measles cases and 18 deaths in 10 countries through Aug. 8, a 34-fold increase from the same period last year.

  • Authorities in Paraguay declared a health emergency after confirming five unvaccinated pediatric measles cases and deployed rapid response teams to conduct targeted vaccination drives in San Pedro.
