Americans’ Sympathy for Palestinians Hits Record High as Support for Israel Falls

Just 17% of Americans say a permanent ceasefire between Israel and Hamas is likely soon

Prop-Palestinian protesters rally in New York City on October 5, 2024.
A record-high share of voters have more sympathy for Palestinians than Israelis, according to a new Quinnipiac University poll.

Overview

  • The latest Quinnipiac poll conducted June 5–9 among 1,265 registered voters finds 37% sympathize more with Israelis, 32% with Palestinians and 31% undecided.
  • Partisan alignment remains stark: 64% of Republicans side with Israel compared with 60% of Democrats who side with the Palestinians.
  • Sympathy for Israel has declined from 61% in October 2023 to 37% now, while backing for Palestinians has climbed from 13% to 32%.
  • Only 24% of Republicans say a ceasefire is likely soon versus 11% of Democrats and 18% of independents.
  • Eroding public support coincides with growing scrutiny of the U.S. alliance with Israel and heightened tensions over possible Israeli strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities.
