American Tourist Loses Leg in Shark Attack While Snorkeling in Turks and Caicos

A 22-year-old woman from Connecticut had her leg bitten off by a shark while snorkeling in Turks and Caicos.
The woman remains hospitalized in serious condition at Cheshire Hall Medical Centre.
The attack occurred outside a resort near the Leeward Marina on the island of Providenciales.
The incident was likely caused by a presumed Caribbean reef shark and appears to be a case of mistaken identity.
Shark attacks are extremely rare, especially in Turks and Caicos where only two other attacks on humans have been recorded.
