American Students Detained in Denmark After Uber Altercation

Two U.S. college students remain in custody as their pre-trial detention is extended following an alleged dispute with an Uber driver.

Owen Ray, 19, and an unnamed friend were detained at Copenhagen Airport on April 1, 2025, after an altercation with an Uber driver the previous day.
The incident reportedly began when the students entered the wrong address in the Uber app, leading to a disagreement that escalated into a physical confrontation.
According to accounts, the Uber driver allegedly kicked Ray, prompting him to push the driver, who then fell; the students later fled the scene.
Danish authorities have charged the students with common assault and extended their pre-trial detention to April 24, citing them as flight risks.
The U.S. Embassy in Copenhagen is providing consular assistance, while Uber has emphasized its commitment to user safety and confirmed the driver reported the incident.
