King illegally crossed into North Korea from South Korea in July and was detained. North Korea expelled King in late September after questioning him. King was transferred to China then flown to a military base in Texas. The US secured King's release through diplomacy with Sweden and China. King cited mistreatment in the army and US inequality as reasons for crossing.
