Overview

  • A June 2–19 Gallup poll finds just 58 percent of U.S. adults say they are extremely or very proud to be American, marking the lowest reading since 2001.
  • Democratic pride has plunged to 36 percent, down from 87 percent when Gallup first posed the question in the aftermath of 9/11.
  • Republican pride remains steady at 92 percent, holding near its highest levels regardless of which party occupies the White House.
  • Independent voters’ patriotism has slid from 84 percent in 2001 to 53 percent today, the weakest level on record for that group.
  • Patriotism falls consistently across generations, with only 41 percent of Generation Z reporting strong national pride compared with roughly three-quarters of baby boomers.
