American Grandmother Freed After Paying $8,000 Fine in Bahamas Cruise Gun Case

Her family’s fundraiser covered the penalty that secured her release following several days in Nassau’s Fox Hill Prison.

Overview

  • Mary Robinson, 69, was arrested Dec. 2 on Royal Caribbean’s Liberty of the Seas in Nassau after police found a loaded Kel-Tec .380 pistol with four rounds in her purse.
  • She pleaded guilty before Magistrate Lennox Coleby, and her attorney negotiated an $8,000 fine with a 24-month default sentence if it went unpaid.
  • Because the fine was not paid immediately, she spent about five to six days at Fox Hill Prison before the payment was made and she was released.
  • A GoFundMe organized by her granddaughter raised more than $12,000 by Dec. 9 to cover the fine and related costs.
  • The firearm apparently passed screening at Port Everglades, port officials say cruise lines handle security, Fox Hill has documented harsh conditions, and Royal Caribbean did not comment.
