American Flight Aborts Takeoff at LAX After Cargo Jet Crosses Active Runway Without Clearance

Regulators put the closest separation at about 5,200 feet as inquiries proceed.

Overview

  • American Airlines Flight 2453 to Boston rejected its takeoff roll after the crew saw an AeroLogic 777 freighter on the runway at Los Angeles International Airport.
  • The FAA said the cargo aircraft crossed runway 25R without authorization as controllers instructed the American jet to cancel takeoff.
  • LiveATC audio captured the controller urgently ordering “German Cargo 619, stop” and telling the American crew to discontinue the takeoff.
  • Flight-tracking data indicated the American jet was accelerating at roughly 154–167 mph when it braked; no injuries were reported among 94 passengers and seven crew.
  • The American flight departed about two and a half hours late, and both the FAA and AeroLogic say they are investigating the runway incursion.
