American Basketball Player Mikayla Cowling Attacked in Poland, Suffers Fractured Eye Socket

Mikayla Cowling, VBW Arka Gdynia player, assaulted by security guard following EuroCup victory, with 48-year-old suspect later detained by police.

  • On Wednesday following a EuroCup women's match victory, American basketball player Mikayla Cowling, who plays for VBW Arka Gdynia, was assaulted in a music club in Gdansk, Poland, a neighboring city to Gdynia on the Baltic coast.
  • The attacker, later identified as a 48-year-old man who worked as a security guard at the club, has been apprehended by the police.
  • According to Boguslaw Witkowski, the president of the Gdynia club, Cowling was attacked near the women's restroom. She was struck multiple times on the head and kicked when she fell.
  • Cowling suffered from multiple injuries, the most serious being a fractured orbital bone. She is currently at home and under observation, with additional tests scheduled for the following week.
  • Gdynia Mayor Wojciech Szczurek expressed outrage at the incident stating, 'Violence and aggression are unacceptable and must be opposed.' He also extended his well wishes to Cowling for her swift recovery.
