American Airlines Adds Automatic Seat-Change Tool to App

The feature monitors seat availability and moves eligible single passengers into window, aisle or middle seats to reduce the work of checking cabin maps.

Overview

  • American rolled out an in-app Automatic Seat Change that lets eligible AAdvantage members set a seat-type preference after booking and be reassigned if a matching seat opens.
  • Access is limited to AAdvantage members on single-passenger reservations with an assigned seat and the service will not move passengers into different cabins.
  • Automatic reassignments stop 24 hours before departure and the airline says customers will not be charged for moves while also not being moved into higher-priced seats.
  • Users enable the option by opening their reservation in the app, scrolling to Trip options and tapping Automatic Seat Change to pick window, aisle or middle.
  • American says the ADEPT team built the tool using emerging-technology methods to solve a common pain point, and the change could ease seat-assignment friction across the carrier’s large network of daily flights.
