Amber Snow Warnings for Midlands as Storm Goretti Triggers Travel Cuts and Road Closures

Authorities are urging only essential travel with emergency kits because forecasters expect disruptive snowfall of around 10–15 cm, higher on hills.

Overview

  • The Met Office amber warning runs from 8pm Thursday to 9am Friday across large parts of the East and West Midlands, with a National Highways amber alert from 6pm.
  • National Highways forecasts about 10–15 cm on routes around Birmingham, Leicester and Nottingham and 8–12 cm on higher routes, and it will close the A628 Woodhead Pass from 8pm.
  • West Midlands Railway and London Northwestern Railway will reduce services from around 7pm, and passengers are being advised to finish journeys early and travel only if necessary.
  • Officials advise avoiding non‑essential trips and preparing vehicles using T.R.I.P. checks, along with carrying warm clothing, food, water and other emergency supplies.
  • The Met Office warns power cuts and mobile service disruptions are possible, and it notes uncertainty over Goretti’s exact track, meaning local impacts and warnings may be updated.
