Amber Snow Warning Prompts Travel Cautions as Storm Goretti Nears Wales

Fresh guidance stresses lawful visibility, safe de-icing and winter kits for anyone who must drive.

Overview

  • The Met Office issued an amber warning for heavy snowfall across large parts of Wales from Thursday night into Friday and says it is safer not to drive, advising alternative transport for essential journeys.
  • West Mercia Police urged pre-journey checks including clear windows and mirrors, working wipers, topped-up screenwash, correct tyre pressures and tread, sufficient fuel, and packing a blanket, charger, food, water and a shovel.
  • Police driving advice for snow and ice includes gentle throttle use, pulling away in second gear, using gears to slow rather than heavy braking, switching on headlights in heavy snow, and leaving much greater gaps to the vehicle ahead.
  • The RAC recommends allowing about 10 minutes to clear all glass with de-icer and a scraper, warns against pouring boiling water on windscreens, and cautions against leaving cars unattended while demisting due to theft risk.
  • Additional winter tips from the AA include slowing down, allowing for far longer stopping distances, and using an old rug or sack under the driving wheels to gain traction if the vehicle becomes stuck.
