Amber Snow Warning in North East England as Arctic Snap Brings Disruption

Health and transport agencies have activated cold-weather plans.

  • An amber alert is active until 9pm for parts of North East England and Yorkshire, with up to 25cm of snow forecast on the North York Moors and Yorkshire Wolds and a risk of power cuts and difficult travel.
  • Five yellow warnings for snow and ice remain in place on Thursday across Northern Ireland, northern Scotland, parts of Wales, the South West and stretches of the North East coast.
  • Police reported vehicles stranded on the A171 near Whitby and closed the A169 between Whitby and Pickering, while National Rail advised passengers to check journeys due to possible delays and cancellations.
  • Operational responses include gritters patrolling key routes nationwide, school closures in parts of Scotland including 190 in Aberdeenshire, and disruption to some CalMac ferry services.
  • Temperatures dropped to -6C overnight with lows near -12C possible in snow-covered parts of Scotland, and forecasters expect conditions to moderate into the weekend.
