AMB Unveils €637 Million Plan to Refocus Barcelona-Area Waste System on Organics by 2035

Most municipalities still fall short of the EU’s 55% selective-collection target.

Overview

  • The program calls for about ten new facilities and reinforcements to seven existing plants, with most work slated to be completed before 2035.
  • AMB officials say the infrastructure shift will prioritize prevention and adapt ecoparks to improve organic-waste processing into higher‑quality compost and biogas.
  • Co‑financing arrangements are being negotiated with the Agència de Residus de Catalunya and the Generalitat.
  • Smart waste containers are planned for pilot trials in early 2026 in Cornellà and Barcelona after strong results in El Prat, and Santa Coloma is evaluating the measure.
  • Selective collection remains stuck around 38–40% as per‑capita waste edged up to 422.4 kg a year, with some municipalities near 25–30% such as Cervelló and Santa Coloma de Gramenet.
