Amazon to Shut All 19 UK Amazon Fresh Stores as It Recasts Grocery Strategy

The company pivots to online grocery with a bigger Whole Foods footprint after its checkout-free format faltered.

Overview

  • Amazon has begun a formal consultation proposing the closure of all 19 UK Amazon Fresh shops, putting about 250 roles at risk while offering redeployment where possible.
  • Up to five Fresh locations are proposed for conversion to Whole Foods Market, with those conversions plus two new sites expected to lift Whole Foods to 12 UK stores by the end of next year.
  • Amazon plans to add fresh groceries such as dairy, meat and seafood to Amazon.co.uk from next year as part of its push to grow online grocery.
  • The company aims to double the number of Prime members with access to at least three grocery options through expanded partnerships with Morrisons, Iceland, Co-op and Gopuff.
  • Launched in 2021 with Just Walk Out technology, the Fresh format struggled to gain traction, and the stores are largely in London with one in Sevenoaks, Kent.
