Amazon Scales Back Nova Line to Focus on Single Frontier AI Model

The company is reallocating engineers and compute to a new frontier-model research team led by Pieter Abbeel and plans to show a flagship at re:Invent.

Overview

  • Multiple outlets reported on July 28 that Amazon has begun winding down most of its flagship Nova models and reallocating resources toward a concentrated frontier-model effort.
  • Key Nova models being deprecated include Nova Premier, Nova Omni, Nova Reel for video, and Nova Canvas for images while Nova 2 Sonic, Nova 2 Lite, Nova Forge and Nova Act will remain supported.
  • The shift follows recent layoffs in Amazon’s AGI organization and the shutdown of AGI Lab after Amazon consolidated AI, silicon and quantum under SVP Peter DeSantis.
  • An Amazon spokesperson said the company remains committed to frontier-model investment and will provide customers guidance and migration paths for models that stay in limited support.
  • The move tightens Amazon’s focus on competing with leading foundation models while strengthening AWS’s role as an AI infrastructure provider and could change timelines for reported hardware and consumer-device projects.
