Amazon Replaces Fire OS With Alexa Tablet Line Running Google’s Android

The company says Android improvements let it ship tablets with the Play Store while making Alexa the central interface for apps and services.

  • Amazon announced on Thursday that it is rebranding its tablets as the Alexa Tablet family and will ship them with stock Android and direct access to the Google Play Store.
  • The 12-inch Alexa Tablet Pro is the new flagship with a MediaTek Dimensity 8400 chip, up to 16 GB of RAM, a 2800×1840 120 Hz display and optional matte Corning-textured glass.
  • Alexa is built into the user interface with an Alexa widget, a Dynamic Tab and a paid Alexa+ service that can capture and analyze on-screen content to act for users such as finding products in videos.
  • Amazon set higher prices than past Fire models — the 12 Pro starts around €500–€560 depending on finish — offers 11‑inch and 8‑inch variants plus keyboard and stylus accessories, and sells Wi‑Fi‑only models.
  • The tablets ship with Android 16 with an Android 17 update planned next year and Amazon promises multi-year support, saying it will provide at least four years of updates after end of sales and will continue initial support for older Fire tablets.
