Amazon Replaces Fire Line With Android-Powered Alexa Tablets

The company is shifting its tablets toward productivity by adding native Google Play access, deploying Alexa+ as an on-screen contextual assistant, and using premium aluminum hardware.

Overview

  • Amazon announced the Alexa Tablet family on Thursday, October 8, 2026, saying the new line will progressively replace the legacy Fire tablets.
  • The devices run standard Android with native access to the Google Play Store so users can install apps like Gmail, YouTube and Google Docs without workarounds.
  • Alexa+ includes On-Screen Intelligence that can read and give context about what appears on the display, and Amazon says the feature is disabled by default for privacy.
  • The flagship Alexa Tablet 12 Pro uses an aluminum unibody, a 12-inch 3:2 display up to 120 Hz, a high-end MediaTek Dimensity chip and up to 16 GB of RAM; U.S. prices start at $499 for the 12-inch, $329 for the 11-inch and $229 for the 8.7-inch.
  • Amazon will sell a magnetic keyboard that draws power from the tablet for $149.99 and an active pen for $89.99, a combination that can push the effective purchase price closer to premium tablet and light laptop rivals.
