Amazon Proposes Closing All 19 UK Amazon Fresh Stores

The company pivots toward online grocery with selective Whole Foods growth after its till-less Fresh format failed to scale.

Overview

  • Amazon has begun a consultation on shutting its remaining Amazon Fresh stores in the UK, a move that would end the physical Fresh format four years after launch.
  • Five locations are proposed for conversion to Whole Foods Market, with plans that would expand Whole Foods to 12 UK stores by the end of next year through conversions and two new sites.
  • Employee consultations are underway and Amazon says affected staff will be offered roles elsewhere in the business, though it has not disclosed how many jobs are at risk.
  • From next year, Amazon plans to offer fresh groceries such as dairy, meat and seafood on Amazon.co.uk as it prioritizes online fulfillment.
  • The retailer says it will double the number of Prime members with access to at least three grocery options via partners including Morrisons, Iceland, Co‑op and Gopuff, and most Fresh sites are in London with one in Sevenoaks.
